Human hosts recruit more host-seeking deer flies (Diptera: Tabanidae) while walking than sitting

چکیده

Biting flies can strongly influence the behaviour of their hosts, for example, there is evidence that some species may avoid harassment by reducing locomotory activity. We tested hypothesis potential hosts reduce attraction to deer remaining stationary—that movement reduces exposure new compared still. During early summer in central Ontario, Canada, we conducted 20-min trials where a human host either walked or sat quietly; tabanids were captured and counted each minute using hat outfitted with sticky trap. 10 treatment, total 868 flies, all genus Chrysops; capture while walking was nearly five-fold greater than sitting. trials, change catch rate also differed While sitting, mean declined rapidly (−16% per min) zero 20 min. In contrast, walking, this decline much more gradual (−5% min); after min, remained constant, at roughly half initial rate. These results are consistent hypothesis.

Preliminary list of horse flies (Diptera, Tabanidae) of Serbia

Thirty six species of horse flies (Tabanidae) were previously known from Serbia (Europe). The present faunistic study of horse flies (Tabanidae) has resulted in the recording of the 4 new species Atylotus fulvus (Meigen, 1804); Tabanus miki Brauer in Brauer and Bergenstamm, 1880; Tabanus unifasciatus Loew, 1858; and Heptatoma pellucens (Fabricius, 1776), in the fauna of Serbia. The genus Heptat...

Diel Host-seeking Activity of Chrysops Celatus (diptera: Tabanidae) in Northwest Florida

Diel host-seeking activity of adult Chrysops celatus Pechuman was studied in northwestern Florida during June 1993 and 1994. Primary peak activity occurred at 0645 h (CST) with a secondary peak at 1945 h. Host-seeking behavior was correlated with relative humidity but not temperature and light intensity. No host-seeking activity was observed at darkness. In all studies, the majority of flies in...

Analysis of the feeding sites for some horse flies (Diptera, Tabanidae) on a human in Croatia.

The landing patterns of horse flies on the human body were observed in Croatia. A total of 386 horse flies belonging to 22 species were sampled. The five most commonly collected species were used in the analysis. The stochastic linear connection is tight among the landings of the species Tabanus bromius, Tabanus maculicornis, Tabanus tergestinus, and Philipomyia graeca on the human body regions...
